BP Claims Process Explained to Southwest Florida Businesses

Now is the time for Southwest Floridians who believe they were adversely affected by 2010's BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico to file claims for compensation under the class action settlement agreed to by BP and the federal government.

Attorneys explained key provisions of the settlement and how the claim-filing process works at a seminar held Tuesday at the Capt. Brien's Seafood and Raw Bar on Marco Island. It drew about 60 attendees.

Providing the insight were attorneys from the Fort Myers-based law firm Aloia, Roland and Lubell and Pensacola-based Levin-Papantonio-Thomas-Mitchell-Rafferty & Proctor.

The attorneys explained the primary criteria for qualifying for compensation and told the audience that they should file a claim even if they're not certain it will be approved.

They also said that under the agreement, there is no cap on the overall claim amounts that BP may pay.

Having legal representation in navigating the claims process is vital and attorneys are handling the cases on a contingency basis, the lawyers added.
